Matt Machlis' Home Page Welcomes You!

This page is not fancy. I just wanted to share some photos with my friends. Feel free to browse my pictures of horses and California scenery and even a few people. I enjoy playing volleyball and hockey and horseback riding. If you do any of those things, especially ride horses, and live in the San Francisco bay area -- or just if you've looked at some of my pictures here and think they're good, or bad -- drop me an email! My address is: username@host.com, where username is "mmach" and host is "yahoo" (hopefully this convoluted presentation, while annoying, will foil evil mass-marketing-email-address-trolling-programs).

January 2001

My first major update in a long time... I imported my hand-created old web site into FrontPage.  Hopefully this will make it easier for me to add new pictures from time to time.  I also added pages with lots of summer 2000 Stanford Red Barn Festival photos.  (For you PC users, I highly recommend IrfanView, a freeware image viewing/processing program that is just great.  It would have taken me 10 times as long to post these Stanford pics without IrfanView's batch processing function.)  (I'm also thankful that the barn manager got Kodak photo CDs when she had the pictures developed -- saving me many hours of scanning that I probably never would have gotten around to.)

Added a link to our company hockey team page.

October 1998
Welcome back, after a long hiatus.  I wasn't able to update my web site here for about a year, but I now own a scanner, and I finally found the time to scan in a bunch of photos from the last year.  Hope you enjoy them!  I thought about converting to a more typical site format, using thumbnails for all images to save people the download time for images they're not interested in, but I decided not to.  It would have been more work for me, and I think my current, roughly-5-images-per-page, setup works fairly well and each page doesn't take -too- long to download.  If you think I should go to thumbnails in the future, please let me know.  Also, I gave up on trying to exactly reproduce my printed photos on the computer screen... it was just too time-consuming.  So, I adjusted the brightness/contrast/color balance to get the best-looking images on the screen (in my opinion).  However, except in cases where there was some physical obstruction that I just could not avoid or I simply couldn't get close enough to my subject, I have kept the original framing of all photos and have not done any retouching.  I'm not a total photo purist, thinking that any electronic alteration of photos in any way is bad, but I also think there should be some skill in taking pictures -- to me, mainly timing and framing and to some extent exposure settings -- so I've tried to retain most of that in going from my original photos to the web site here.  If you have any comments, as always, feel free to email me.
