Actually, first I took a picture of the moving map display in the airplane to prove where I was. ;-) We stayed at the North Sydney Harbourview Hotel, which was really great. The rooms were under $100 USD per night, and included a full buffet breakfast every morning. The staff was amazingly friendly, the views were incredible (every room in the hotel except for 1 on each floor has a harbor view), and the location was great, just across the bridge from downtown, with a train station and cab stand half a block away. Also, each room had a nice work area with a marble-top desk, a desk lamp, and outlets and a phone jack right next to the desk. Below are a few pictures I took, mostly from my own room, but one or two are from the window down the hall at the elevators. The window in my room was pretty smudged up, and had only a small pane that could swing open about 45 degrees, with not enough open space to take pictures through. So, I secured the wrist strap of our digital camera around my wrist, and reached my hand through the opening and outside the window, then looked at the LCD display through the window and took the pictures. For the night shots, there happened to be a ledge just outside my window, so I did the same thing but set the camera down on the ledge and used the 2-second timer so I wouldn't be touching it when the shutter went off. (Shutter speeds were around 1 second, if I recall correctly.) On this trip I discovered that, with the right settings, our digital camera can do a very nice job on nighttime pictures. In this one you can see, there were a lot of sailboats out on the weekends. This is looking across at downtown Sydney. You can see the nice little cove in front of my hotel. You can also see the ferris wheel below the bridge, that was a little amusement park called Luna Park, but it was all fenced off, it's temporarily closed for renovation. Here's a picture of my room. You can see the work area at the right edge of the frame. Finally, I thought this was kind of funny, there was a whole set of little signs you could hang on the knob outside your door, whatever combination was appropriate at the time. |
