Next in Darling Harbour, I took a tour of a World War II-era gun-ship (the Vampire) and submarine (the Onslow) at the Maritime Museum. That was fun, and on the ship I decided to follow a guided tour led by a volunteer who was very knowledgeable. Here is the command center of the ship, the captain's chair is on the left. This is the loading mechanism for one of the three gun turrets. The whole green and red section on the left would rotate as the turret above on the deck rotated. General crew sleeping quarters... This was taken from the deck of the Onslow. Here are the torpedo tubes inside the Onslow. The Onslow is a small diesel attack sub, and it was very cramped inside. Here is a wall of gauges and valves in the control room of the Onslow. I thought this sign on the gun turret on the Vampire was a little disturbing (though obviously not applicable anymore since the ship was decommissioned). I liked the scenery in the picture below, with the office buildings in the background. And here are the Vampire and the Onslow, with a strange bright-red thing in front of them. |
