Day 12 cont'd: Place de la Concorde

We walked from the Arc de Triomphe towards the Lourvres, along the way stopping at the Place de la Concorde, a square built in the late 1700s.  In the 1800s many of the royalty were guillotined here in the French Revolution.  The fountain and obelisk (a gift from the Viceroy of Egypt) were added in the 1800s.  One of the two fountains at the plaza had just gotten cleaned up and re-gilded with gold.

At the base of this obelisk, there was a diagram of how it was taken down in Egypt on one side, and how it was erected in Concorde Plaza on the other side.  Lots-o-pulleys were used!
