Day 3 cont'd: Mt. Shasta

After checking in at Railroad Park and exploring a bit, we drove about 15 minutes to Mt. Shasta City (click for info), a nice little town at the base of Mt. Shasta (which provides an amazing backdrop).  The city has quite a few restaurants and shops and some motels.  From there we drove up Mt. Shasta (click for info) - we drove about 45 minutes up Everitt Memorial Highway into the Mt. Shasta Wilderness, which is part of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.  Mt. Shasta is a dormant volcano that has erupted about once every 250 to 300 years for the last few thousand years.  The peak is 14,162 feet.

This is the view from Mt. Shasta City, a couple of blocks off of the main strip of shops:

These are taken from the road going up the mountain:

Then we reached the highest point you can drive to, Old Ski Bowl, and got out and walked around.  It was quite chilly, and very windy, a steady wind of probably 20 MPH with gusts to 30-40 MPH.

Then we headed back down the mountain and took these along the way:

Finally, the last day of our trip, as we were getting ready to head home, we noticed that the mountain was white, so we drove back to Mt. Shasta City and I got one more picture.  There had obviously been a storm overnight.
